Become a Fitness Instructor
For almost 30 years, the YMCA-YWCA of the Central Okanagan has been leading the way in the field fitness training, certifying instructors using the BCRPA system. Step 1 - Basic Theory
The YMCA Basic Fitness Theory Course is the first step in becoming a Fitness Leader in any of the modules. This course covers exercise physiology, skeletal and muscular anatomy, nutrition, training principles and more. Must be 16 yrs. BCRPA Theory Exam is optional.
Step 2a - Individual Conditioning
This course teaches the basics of designing weight training programs. If you’re considering becoming a Personal Trainer, this course is the second step towards that goal.
OR
Step 2b - Group Fitness
Learn to lead group fitness classes and help motivate participants to reach their fitness goals in a fun, motivating, group setting. This course begins with group fitness fundamentals and includes your choice of 2 streams: Aquatic Fitness; Group Fitness; and Group Cycling.
Step 3 - Apprenticeship / Practicum
Attain peer and practical teaching experience for new instructors under the supervision of a qualified fitness trainer. Ongoing registration.
Step 4 - ICE (Instructor Competency Evaluation)
After completing the three steps in the module you have chosen, you will be evaluated by a registered Trainer of Fitness Leaders for the YMCA certification and BCRPA registration.
