The mission of the YMCA-YWCA is to foster growth of all persons in spirit, mind and body and heighten their sense of responsibility to each other and the global community. With a bold strategic vision, mutually beneficial partnerships, the generous support of our donors and volunteers, and a strong staff and leadership team, we’re poised to meet the changing needs of our community well into the future.
Here’s is some of the ways the YMCA-YWCA of the Central Okanagan is making an impact:
Accessibility
- Through financial sponsorship, the Y remains accessible to all. 1,310 low income children and families benefited from a Y membership, program or service
- 41% of those receiving assistance were children and youth. That’s why funds raised through the Annual Y Strong Kids Campaign are so important
Reach
- 31,811 people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities were served by the YMCA-YWCA of the Central Okanagan in 2009
- Association memberships total 8,853 representing an increase of 46% over 2008
- 43% of Y participants are children and youth. The Y is the largest provider of not-for-profit child care in Canada
Volunteers
- 310 individuals made a difference in their community by volunteering and assisting with recreational programs, childcare and other important Y community events and services
Donors
- 275 donors contributed over $5.6M to the Kelowna Family Y Capital Expansion Campaign
- 206 donors to the Y Strong Kids Campaign provided more than $170,000 worth of programs, services and membership to local families in need
Health, Fitness & Recreation
- 59,355 members and participants stay active through Y health, fitness and recreation at the Kelowna Family Y and H2O Adventure + Fitness Centre
- 6,280 kids learned how to swim
- Trained over 600 lifeguard candidates in the past year
Child Care
- Supported the healthy development of 240 children in 5 full service child care centres and school age programs
- Y Day Camps made summer fun, active and educational for more than 100 children
Leadership Development
- a Y Youth Advisory Council comprised of students from grades 10 to 12 was formed to help “youth create programs for youth”
Employment Training
- The Y’s Career Contact Centre for Youth and Jumpstart: Employment Essentials provided 2,007 young people facing barriers to employment or wanting to enter the workforce with free career counseling, job training, and access to technology
Partnerships
- Collaborations with the City of Kelowna, health organizations, school district 23, and the provincial and federal government has led to innovative approaches to healthy living and community building
International Development & Education
- Together with other BC YMCA’s we’ve helped more than 2,000 Ethiopian youth to educate their peers on HIV/AIDS prevention
