2008 Strong Kids Campaign
1 in 5 Kids receive financial assistance at the Kelowna Family Y

At the Y, we believe that no child should be denied a YMCA-YWCA experience because of financial circumstances.  Thanks to the many donors who contribute to the Strong Kids Campaign, children in our community have the opportunity to participate in Y programs, regardless of their ability to pay the full fee.

When kids participate in a YMCA-YWCA experience, they have the opportunity to develop self confidence, make healthy choices, feel connected and learn the skills necessary to become the leaders of today and tomorrow.  In turn, they find out what it takes to build strong families and strong communities.

Our Goal is Simple…

To change the lives of more children and youth here in our community through membership or participation in YMCA-YWCA programs by raising $65,000 in 2008.

100% of money raised goes directly to kids, providing:

  • Financially assisted Kelowna Family Y memberships
  • Program participation
  • Y Childcare subsidies
  • Support and development of child & youth programs

$5/mth ($60/yr)

helps a child learn to swim and develop water safety skills
$25/mth ($300/yr) keeps a youth healthy & active by providing a one-year membership
$100/mth ($1,200/yr) sends 10 kids aged 5 – 12 yrs to one week of YMCA-YWCA Summer Day Camp – a chance to make new friends and strengthen core values

Chair's Round Table

In 2006, we introduced a unique opportunity for truly philanthropic organizations and individuals, the Chair’s Round Table (CRT).  Members of the CRT are committed to the betterment of the health and wellness of our most vulnerable age group and they express their support by making leadership donations of $1,000 or more.

On May 9, 2007 our first CRT event/reception was held, where this extraordinary group were able to meet and where the beginnings of a network of philanthropic leaders was formed.  We look forward to hosting this annual event where we can share our passion for children and youth.

Strong Kids Good News Stories:

1.  This fall a single dad with a child at Quigley Elementary School contacted our Y Out of School Program located there requiring last minute care for his 6 year old daughter so that he could attend a job interview.  Having just moved from Grand Forks, they are new to Kelowna and looking for a fresh start.  Dad is a cook by trade and as he has no support network he is unable to accept evening work.  He has just accepted a job with low pay in order to work a daytime shirt.  Dad has run into many challenges this fall.  However, through the Ys childcare financial assistance there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  The financial assistance provided by the Ys Strong Kids Campaign is giving him a chance to address the necessities he and his daughter need such as shelter and furniture.  Dad is incredibly thankful for the Y and the support being provided, emotional and financial.

2.  I am a single mom with two children.  The YMCA-YWCA came into our lives 7 years ago.  Since then, both of my children have gone to the after school program, and participated in swim classes.  I try and use the gym facilities when time permits.  We ato get involved with things they have to offer.  The Y has made this possible through special financial assistance.  (thank you)

My daughter was 5 years old when we started using the Y’s after school care program.  She was diagnosed mildly mentally challenged, with ADHD.  We had many ups and downs in the time she attended the Y.  Things had to be adapted for her.  Defiance was a difficult challenge for many…but everyone hung in there!!!

Today, she is 12 years old, and has become a great girl.  She was given opportunities that many children do not have access to.  The Y passed on morals and values she was able to apply in her day to day living.  Along with building great friendships.

Due to her age, she was no longer able to attend the after school program. However, that has not stopped her from attending the Y.  She participates in swimming after school, physical activities ie (pump and jump and move ‘n grove) She loves the leadership program…this allows her to be with other teens experiencing great leadership skills, and having fun at the same time.

I believe she is at a very impressionable age.  If she did not have the Y in her life, she could be easily influenced to go down the wrong path…This has given her a great start!  She knows the Y is arms length of where we live, and can go anytime.

Thank you for all your support over the years!

3.  I wanted to write a little something to express my thanks to the Y.

The YM-YWCA has been one of the most important support systems my two sons and I have had. In September 2006 I become a single parent and our lives were turned upside down due to all factors involved.

The Y entered our lives before this event. We participated in different activities as a family and my youngest son was involved in the afterschool care program at the Y. The Child Care staff  and volunteers are to be commended for their roles - they pick up and deliver our children safely and are role models for our kids - day after day.

Since becoming a single parent the YMCA has offered myself and my children the support we could have not received anywhere else financially and emotionally.
Thank you, Kim
