YMCA Learn to swim
6-14yrs
Introduce your non-swimmer to a series of easy to learn skills, in a values-based environment, through this four level program. Successful completion indicates that the learner is capable of performing a variety of skills in shallow and deep water; including the fundamentals of the front crawl stroke.
Otter – Level 1
Otters orient the beginner to water, assist him or her to experience the buoyant qualities of water, introduce elementary movement skills, develop comfort and confidence in the water and offer an enjoyable experience. Instructor to participant ratio is 1:6.
Seal – Level 2
Seals improve front and back glides, introduce rollovers and increase endurance to 10 meters. Instructor to participant ratio is 1:6.
Dolphin – Level 3
Dolphins build on previous learning, introduce front crawl, deep water skills and increase endurance to 25 meters. Instructor to participant ratio is 1:8.
Swimmer – Level 4
Swimmers build on previous skills in deep water, develop proper techniques of the front crawl stroke, introduce the back crawl and develop the individuals’ ability to swim a distance of 50 meters. Instructor to participant ratio is 1:8.
